Something happened between Cheetah Flees vs Wild Dog.
The cheetah is a large cat of the subfamily Felinae in Southern, North and East Africa and and a few localities in Iran.
Cheetahs can reach speeds of 112 km/h (70 mph) in short bursts, but this is disputed by more recent measurements.
Cheetah Flees vs Wild Dog
This is the moment a cheetah put its tail between its legs and ran off.
Itchased by what had been its lunchtime snack just moments before.
The cheetah was pursuing an animal which appears to be a wild dog or bat-eared fox in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, but rather than finishing it off, the big cat found itself being chased off by its prey half its size.
Jorge Alescano, 42, from Spain, said: ‘It was as if the dog just decided he didn’t want to be dinner any more – it was amazing. We’ve got no idea why the cheetah reacted like this.
‘It’s a mystery to me because the dog would have been an easy meal for the cheetah if he had carried on with the pursuit. ‘He dramatically stopped the chase and caused the cheetah to lose balance but what happened next was even more surprising. ‘He then began to chase the cheetah away which was incredible to watch – it was a once in a life time opportunity.’
The wild dog turns on the spot, facing cheetah
For a split second, the cheetah appears to realise what is about to happen as the smaller animal turns on him. The chase takes off again, but not at all in the way the cheetah had planned – which is clearly visible on its face. Despite being one of the fastest animals on the planet, the cheetah struggles to get away.
No longer a case of getting an afternoon snack, the cheetah has to run for its life, with the wild dog at its heels. As the cheetah picks up speed, it appears to be able to get away with it – at least this once
